Sleeve Notes

Mike Donald was a professional salesman – a fact he made good use of in these songs. He was born in Scunthorpe and Educated in Hull, and worked for an educational publishing concern in Leeds. For ten years Mike clocked up 40,000 miles per year selling confectionery, washing machines and audio-visual equipment. Mike visited most towns and villages between the Midlands and the Scottish border, and entertained in Workings Men’s Clubs, Folk Clubs, hotels, churches, on ferryboats on the Humber, and even on specially chartered trains to Wales and Scotland, as well as radio and TV. His musical background was varied, with experience in Skiffle, Rock and Rhythm and Blues groups and dance bands.

Mike used his Yorkshire upbringing and wide musical background to produce his own material, which he described as “not quite folk”; this was his third record. He lived in Skipton, North Yorkshire – ‘Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales’ and passed away in 1984 at the age of 41.

Record Label

Galliard – A Folk label, from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Galliard started issuing records in 1969; it managed more than twenty issues before expiring, which it appears to have done c.1975. Most of its records were albums but there were at least four singles among them.
